I am home from the hospital, home and still giggling over the note found taped to a hospital bed above. In my mind, Winnipeg is a place of blunt practicalities, a place with little truck for euphemistic conversation; apparently it shares this with the health care industry. I may have been far too optimistic about my ability to blog much in these, the early days of recovery. Even yesterday, after waking up from surgery bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, with minimal pain, I figured I’d be bounding out of there in no time, reading for a relaxing recovery week at home and cranking up the [...click for more...]

It’s Friday night in Winnipeg and fantastically, I have Friday night social plans! How delightful. Before I go, I want to thank everyone who has linked to Nothing in Winnipeg from their own, more useful blogs. Through this quiet action (and some not-so-quiet actions, thank you Mr. Committee), I feel a lovely warm welcome from the blogosphere. And I’m looking forward to playing some small part. Years ago, when I first got the blog-bug, I spent some time browsing for Winnipeg blogs. But back then, the local blogosphere was hard to breathe in: too thin, content molecules too scattered. So [...click for more...]

A quick thought. I read a lot of blog posts and Tweets and letters and comments and emails criticizing journalists in Manitoba, and in Canada. That includes criticisms of your humble narrator, of course. Someday I shall share excerpts from my favourite old hate mails with you - I think we will all enjoy them. Anger is a fantastic creative force. Anyway, sometimes I think the critiques are bang-on. Sometimes I think they’re way off the mark.  But tonight, scanning my normal blog round-up, I started thinking back to every Tweet and blog and email I can remember expressing frustration, anger or disappointment with any Canadian journalist or broadcast [...click for more...]

I would like to graciously thank all the nice folks who have linked me here, there and everywhere. Now that people are actually reading, and my heart’s all in here, and well I’m full of all kinds of blather, it occurs to me: while my manifesto is, perhaps, a statement of personal goals and a commitment not to wuss out, it’s not exactly a guiding document on content. And I’m curious what folks who are swinging by would enjoy for me to write. So why not start a poll? Everyone loves a radial button! Also, I want to take my newest WordPress plugin for [...click for more...]

Nothing suits a broken heart (see below post) like some late-night work catching up on blogs. And in this case, it prompts a short post. Over at Anybody Want a Peanut, Cherenkov aptly boggles over the continued expansion of warning labels on cigarette packages.  (P.S. Oh hi! Hello! I have just found your blog. Remember how I told you, before, that I hadn’t seen it? Well now I have! Huzzah!) He’s right, of course, but an interesting note on this. Photographer Mike Deal and I were tasked with gathering up some local colour to add on to the wire story last [...click for more...]
